Pendleton

Eastern Oregon ranch town with rodeo history, wool mills, and a layered downtown.

Pendleton is the sort of Eastern Oregon town that explains itself slowly. From the highway it can look like a service stop in dry wheat country, but the old centre has real weight: brick storefronts, saddle shops, a famous woollen mill, and a rodeo tradition that still fills the town every September.

The best visit is built around three strands of local history. The Pendleton Underground Tours lead beneath downtown into rooms tied to saloons, gambling, Chinese immigrant workers, and the less polished side of a frontier railroad town. The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame explains why the rodeo is not just an event here but part of the town's identity. East of town, the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute tells the story from the perspective of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla people.

Pendleton is not a polished resort town, and that is part of the point. Come for a day if you are crossing Oregon on I-84, or make it an overnight stop if you want a small, specific western town with more substance than its size suggests.
