Black Point is a low rocky headland south of town with a network of unmarked paths along the cliff edge — possibly the best free coastal walk in southern Rhode Island. The trail starts from a small unmarked dirt pull-off on Ocean Road and traces the shoreline past tide pools, blue-mussel shelves and the foundations of a 19th-century fish trap. Fishermen often have rods set up off the rocks.
It is not a long walk — an hour will cover the loop comfortably — but it gives an unusually wild view of this otherwise tame stretch of coast. Wear sturdy shoes; the trail can be slippery after rain and there are no railings between you and a 20-foot drop into the swell.
