The Seawall

The long stone seawall and promenade along Ocean Road

The half-mile stone seawall along Ocean Road is one of those public works that quietly defines a town. Built in the 1920s as a hurricane defence after a series of devastating storms, it now doubles as the town's evening promenade — couples, joggers, fishermen with surf rods leaning over the wall casting into the breakers.

Walk from The Towers south past the Coast Guard House to the end of the wall and back: 20 minutes, completely flat, with the surf on one side and shingle cottages and the occasional grand summer house on the other. Sunset hits the wall full-on; pack a takeaway coffee or chowder from one of the spots across the road and join the locals on the bench rail.
