Custer is the most useful small base in the southern Black Hills. It is less hectic than Keystone, closer to the caves than Rapid City, and close enough to the granite, bison, and pine forest that the town feels like part of the landscape rather than a service stop beside it.
The big draws sit just outside town. Custer State Park has the Wildlife Loop, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake, and some of the best short hikes in South Dakota. Crazy Horse Memorial is north of town, while Jewel Cave National Monument lies west along Highway 16.
Custer itself is small, but it has enough history to reward a walk before or after a drive in the hills. The 1881 Courthouse Museum explains the gold-rush settlement, while Four Mile Old West Town leans into the stage-road past. Come for the surrounding country, then let Custer be the place where the Black Hills slow down.
