The Cathedral of Saint Joseph rises above downtown Sioux Falls in Romanesque Revival style, its pale quartzite towers visible from much of the city centre. Construction began in 1915 using locally quarried Sioux Falls granite, the same pinkish stone used throughout the city's older buildings. The interior is richly decorated with stained glass and marble.
The cathedral is freely open to visitors outside of service times. The quartzite construction makes it feel genuinely of this place — you will not find this stone used so consistently anywhere else in the country. Worth a quick visit if you are already walking Phillips Avenue.
