Sioux Falls has a classic northern plains climate: hot summers, cold winters, and dramatic swings in between. Summer (June to August) is the most pleasant time to visit — warm days, long evenings, and the outdoor events calendar in full swing. The SculptureWalk is best appreciated on foot in good weather, and Falls Park is at its most accessible. Temperatures regularly hit 30°C in July.
Winter is genuinely cold, often reaching -20°C with windchill. Falls Park in winter, with ice formations on the quartzite ledges, is striking if you are dressed for it. Spring is short and often muddy. Autumn (September to October) is arguably the best season: moderate temperatures, lower humidity, and the cottonwood trees along the Big Sioux River turning yellow and gold.
