George Mitchell Nature Preserve

A large nature preserve threading through the western and central parts of The Woodlands, with over 20 miles of trails through longleaf pine forest, hardwood creek bottoms, and seasonal wetlands. It's free to enter and open daily from dawn to dusk. The trails are unpaved but well-maintained and clearly marked.

Birdwatching is the main draw for serious nature visitors — the preserve hosts neotropical migrants in spring and a resident population of red-headed woodpeckers, barred owls, and pileated woodpeckers year-round. Trail maps are available at the trailheads and online through the Woodlands Township website.

A story
George Mitchell, the developer who built The Woodlands, insisted that a significant portion of the community be preserved as natural land. The result is this 1,700-acre forest preserve woven through the residential neighborhoods — one of the few suburban developments in Texas where the pine woods actually survived construction.
