Price

Eastern Utah coal town near Colorado Plateau canyon country, known for dinosaur fossils and Nine Mile Canyon rock art.

Price is a small city in Carbon County in eastern Utah, sitting at the edge of the Colorado Plateau roughly two hours southeast of Salt Lake City. It is a working coal-mining town without much tourist gloss, but it punches above its weight for anyone interested in prehistoric life: the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum holds one of the finest collections of dinosaur fossils in the region, including the fearsome Utahraptor and the long-necked Camarasaurus.

The surrounding canyon country offers hiking and off-road exploration in Nine Mile Canyon, which contains one of the longest concentrations of ancient rock art in North America. Price makes a practical base for exploring the remote canyon lands between Moab and the Wasatch Front.

Things to Do

Price's main cultural draw is a genuinely world-class dinosaur museum, which justifies the drive on its own for anyone interested in prehistoric life. Beyond that, the canyon country around the city is the real attraction: Nine Mile Canyon to the northeast is one of the densest concentrations of ancient rock art in North America and rewards a half-day or full-day drive.
