A Richmond institution on the south edge of Shockoe Bottom, Bottoms Up has been making deep-dish pizza since 1988 in a converted Victorian building with a rooftop patio overlooking the James River. The pizza is genuinely good — thick, well-topped, with a crisp bottom — and the setting is hard to beat: you can watch the trains rumbling over the trestle bridge with the river below. Busy on Friday and Saturday evenings; the lunch service is calmer.
