When to Go

Richmond has a mid-Atlantic climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (March–May) is the most appealing: mild temperatures, dogwood and cherry blossoms throughout the parks, and the James River at a lively level for kayaking. Summer is hot and humid — July highs around 32°C (90°F) — but the city remains lively and the James River swimming holes are in full use. Fall (September–November) brings cool days and warm light; the outdoor farmers markets are at their best and the university population is back in town. Winter is cold but rarely severe; the city sees occasional snow but nothing like Washington, D.C. just 90 minutes north.

The Monument Avenue 10K road race in April is one of the city's biggest events. The Richmond Folk Festival in October brings free outdoor music to the James River waterfront for three days and is one of the best music festivals in the region. The French Film Festival, held in March at the Byrd Theatre, is the longest-running French film festival in the United States.
