Manito Park

Manito Park is Spokane's finest urban park, 90 acres of gardens and green space in the South Hill neighbourhood south of downtown. The park contains several distinct garden areas: a formal rose garden with over 1,500 bushes that peaks in June and July, a Japanese garden with koi pond and traditional design, a perennial garden, a conservatory with tropical plants open year-round, and a duck pond at the north end.

The rose garden is Spokane's most popular outdoor attraction in summer — the combination of elevation (the park sits on the South Hill plateau) and the dry eastern Washington climate suits roses particularly well. The park is free and open year-round; the conservatory charges a small admission.

A story
The Japanese Garden at Manito was designed by Nagao Sakurai and established in 1974 as part of Spokane's friendship relationship with Nishinomiya, Japan. It is maintained entirely by volunteers and is one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in the Pacific Northwest, with a koi pond, stone lanterns, and carefully pruned trees that follow traditional design principles.
