Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park

Historic island park with mansion and sternwheeler ferry

The island is only reachable by sternwheeler ferry from Point Park on 2nd Street in downtown Parkersburg, which adds to the sense of occasion. Once on shore, horse-drawn wagon rides carry visitors to the restored Blennerhassett mansion, a lavish Federal-style house that was burned by the Virginia militia in 1806 after owner Harman Blennerhassett was implicated in Aaron Burr's conspiracy to establish an independent western nation. The mansion has been fully reconstructed and interpreted to show life among the gentry of the early republic. Staff in period dress demonstrate domestic crafts, and the grounds have a pleasant wildness to them. The island also has walking trails, picnic areas, and a small beach.
