Smoot Theatre

A handsome 1926 vaudeville and movie palace at the corner of 5th and Market, restored in the 1990s after a long period of decline. Most of the original detail survived — the proscenium arch, the painted ceiling, the carved plasterwork — and the theatre now runs as a non-profit venue for touring shows, regional opera, ballet and concerts.

The programme is heavy on Americana — country, bluegrass, holiday revues — and the seasonal pantos are a Parkersburg institution. Worth checking what is on; even on a slow night the lobby and the auditorium are some of the best Roaring Twenties interiors in the state.
