Christ Episcopal Church and Rectory

Built in 1898, Christ Episcopal Church is the oldest church in Douglas and the only wooden church remaining in the city. Architect G.W.G. Van Winkle designed it in the Gothic Revival style — with a bell tower, steep roofline, lancet windows with stained glass, and external buttresses — though the construction had to adapt the design to frontier realities: limited funds, limited materials, and a congregation that was making things up as they went.

The result is a modest but genuinely handsome building that tells you something about aspiration in early Wyoming. The parishioners wanted something that looked like a proper English church, and they achieved a recognisable approximation of one on the high plains. The church and its rectory were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and the building is still an active parish. It sits at 4th and Center Streets in downtown Douglas.
