St. Croix has around 53 miles of coastline, and the beaches vary considerably from one end of the island to the other. The north shore is rougher and better for surfing; the south and east are calmer, with the clearest water for snorkeling. Most beaches are public by law even if fronted by private property — access can sometimes be awkward but it's always legal.
