When to Go

St. Croix sits just outside the main hurricane belt compared to some Caribbean islands, but is still vulnerable to storms from August through October. The dry season runs from December to April — the classic Caribbean high season, with lower humidity, reliable sunshine, and slightly higher prices and hotel rates.

The shoulder months of May through July are often a good compromise: the trade winds keep things comfortable, the island is quieter than the winter peak, and prices drop. The Crucian Christmas Festival, a major carnival stretching from late December into early January, is worth timing a trip around if you're interested in local music, food, and street culture — it's one of the more authentic carnivals in the US Virgin Islands. July brings the St. Croix Food and Wine Experience, which draws serious attention from the food world.
