Cruzan Rum Distillery

Cruzan Rum Distillery sits in the center of St. Croix, a working distillery that has been producing rum on this site since the 18th century. Tours run on weekdays and Saturday mornings and last about 45 minutes; they cover the full production process from fermentation through distillation and aging, including the remarkable barrel warehouse where the aged rums mature in the Caribbean heat. The tasting at the end includes several expressions, from the light white rums used in cocktails to the aged singletons that can hold their own against Barbadian competitors.

Cruzan is not an artisanal boutique operation — it's an industrial distillery producing millions of bottles a year — but the tour is genuinely interesting and the people running it clearly know their rum. The distillery shop sells bottles that are cheaper than you'll find elsewhere, including some limited expressions not distributed off-island. If you're going to buy rum as a souvenir, buy it here.

A story
Cruzan Rum takes its name from the local term for a person from St. Croix — a "Crucian" — derived from the Spanish "Santa Cruz." The distillery has been producing rum on this site since 1760, making it one of the oldest continuously operating rum distilleries in the Caribbean. The original colonial-era copper pot stills are still used for some of the aged expressions.
