One of the five plazas that radiate from the central Plaza Independencia, Plaza España is the most ornate — tiled in Sevillian azulejos and decorated with scenes from Argentine and Spanish history. Donated by Spain in 1946, it has a distinctly Andalusian character, with fountains and benches shaded by dense trees. On Saturday mornings it hosts one of Mendoza's best artisan markets, where local craftspeople sell leather goods, jewellery, and textiles. In the evenings it becomes a gathering spot, and in summer locals bring mate and settle in for hours.
