Teatro Independencia

Mendoza's neoclassical opera house and home of the Provincial Philharmonic

Teatro Independencia is Mendoza's premier performing arts venue, a neoclassical building from 1925 with four Corinthian columns rising from a green marble base on the edge of Plaza Independencia. The interior was modelled on Italian opera houses, with four tiers of balconies and grand marble stairs leading to the 730-seat auditorium. It is the home of the Provincial Philharmonic Orchestra and hosts visiting companies, music festivals, and theatrical performances throughout the year.

The facade is one of the more distinguished architectural statements in central Mendoza, and even if you're not attending a performance it's worth pausing to look at it. The corner location means it reads well from the adjacent streets, and evening performances provide a good reason to dress up slightly in a city where most nightlife is informal.

Check current schedules at the theatre box office or online; the programme varies considerably by season. Tickets are reasonably priced by European standards.

A story
The theatre opened in 1925 with an opera by an Argentine composer — unusual for an era when South American venues typically inaugurated with European work. In 1944 a cinema was added to the building, and its inaugural film was Casablanca. A fire in 1963 gutted much of the interior; the rebuilding that followed kept the original neoclassical facade but updated the stage technology.
