Plaza Italia is one of the four smaller plazas that surround the central Plaza Independencia, each two blocks out from the centre in its respective direction. The Italian community donated and designed it, and the result has a slightly more formal character than some of the others — stone paths, good shade trees, and a monument to Italian immigration that acknowledges the substantial Italian component of Argentine society.
On Sunday mornings the plaza hosts a crafts fair that draws sellers of antiques, handmade goods, leather work, and general merchandise. It is more relaxed than the larger Artesan markets and worth a browse if you're in the area.
The surrounding streets contain some good cafés and it's a pleasant place to sit with a coffee and watch the Mendoza morning unfold. From the plaza the walk back to the centre via any of the main avenues is about ten minutes.
