Colonia Carlos Pellegrini

Colonia Carlos Pellegrini is the main base for exploring the Iberá Wetlands — a small, unhurried village sitting directly on Laguna Iberá, the central lagoon of the wetland system. The village has a handful of posadas, restaurants, and tour operators, all oriented towards wildlife tourism. It is accessible via 120 km of road from the town of Mercedes: 40 km of tarmac, then 80 km of gravel road in generally good condition that can become challenging after heavy rain.

From Pellegrini, the lagoon is immediately accessible — boats depart from the village dock for morning and afternoon wildlife tours, and the floating islands visible from shore are themselves a habitat worth exploring on foot with a guide. The village has a visitor centre with natural history exhibits, and several operators offer horseback rides through the surrounding esteros for a different perspective on the landscape.

A story
The 900 inhabitants of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini live on the shores of the largest freshwater lagoon in Argentina, surrounded by one of the world's most important wetland systems. For most of the 20th century, the village economy depended on cattle ranching and fishing. Today, the transformation to wildlife tourism has been so complete that families who once hunted capybara and caiman now earn their living taking visitors to photograph them.
