Plaza 1° de Mayo

The main square of the city, ringed by the cathedral, the provincial government house, the municipal palace, and the cardinal's residence. The plaza is shaded by palms and jacarandas, with benches busy from late afternoon onwards. A municipal band plays here some weekends; on summer evenings the cafés along the eastern side spill out under the trees.

It is also the historic centre of Argentine federal government: this is where the Confederation's parliament met during Paraná's spell as national capital from 1854 to 1861.
