Museo del Puerto

The Port Museum occupies a handsome turn-of-the-century customs building in Ingeniero White, a few hundred metres from the water. It documents the history of the port and the immigrant communities who built it — Italians and Spaniards primarily, arriving from the 1880s onward to work the docks, the grain elevators, and the meat processing facilities.

The collection is genuinely interesting: tools, photographs, documents, domestic objects, and oral history recordings from the descendants of the first settlers. There is also a good section on the tango tradition that developed in this neighbourhood, with recordings and instruments. The museum runs occasional weekend events, including live music performances. Free entry.

A story
The museum was founded in 1987 by a group of local residents who felt that the immigrant history of the port neighbourhood was being forgotten. Their collection began with personal objects brought from Italy and Spain by the grandparents of port workers: photographs, kitchen implements, religious images, work tools. It remains one of the more unusual and human-scale history museums in Argentina — less interested in grand narratives than in the texture of working-class immigrant life.
