Potosí is well placed for excursions to other significant Bolivian destinations.
Sucre (3 hours by bus) is Bolivia's constitutional capital and a beautifully preserved whitewashed colonial city. It complements Potosí well — together they represent the two great colonial cities of the southern Altiplano. Sucre has better restaurants, a warmer climate, and the excellent Museo de Arte Indígena (ASUR) with its collection of Jalq'a and Tarabuco textiles.
Uyuni Salt Flats (5–6 hours) — the vast white expanse of the Salar de Uyuni is one of South America's most dramatic natural landscapes. Most tours to the Salar depart from the town of Uyuni, which is accessible by bus or train from Potosí.
Tarapaya hot springs (25 km north of Potosí) — thermal pools at lower altitude than the city, set in an eroded volcanic landscape. A half-day excursion that many travellers find helpful for the altitude adjustment.
