Potosí's appeal is overwhelmingly historical. The colonial silver city that once funded the Spanish Empire has preserved much of its 16th and 17th-century urban fabric, and the Casa de la Moneda alone is worth the journey at altitude. Mine tours into the still-working shafts of Cerro Rico offer one of the most sobering travel experiences in South America.
