Museo Nacional de Etnografía y Folklore

The Museo Nacional de Etnografía y Folklore (MUSEF) is housed in a spectacular colonial palace and covers the indigenous cultures of Bolivia with depth and seriousness. The permanent collection includes textiles, masks, musical instruments, ceramics, and ritual objects from across the country, with particularly strong holdings on Andean weaving traditions and the diverse cultures of the lowland regions.

The building itself is worth a visit on architectural grounds: the courtyard and main portal are prime examples of the 18th-century baroque architecture of Potosí, and the carved stone work is exceptionally fine. The museum is part of a national network with branches in La Paz and Sucre, but the Potosí branch benefits from the colonial setting and has strong local collections. Admission is low and opening hours are regular on weekdays.

A story
The museum occupies the former Casa de los Marqueses de Otavi, one of the grandest colonial mansions in the city. The building's carved stone portal is considered a masterwork of mestizo baroque, with indigenous imagery worked into what is ostensibly a European decorative vocabulary — a visual record of the cultural collision that Potosí represented.
