Eixo Monumental

The vast 16km axis that gives Brasília its fuselage

The Monumental Axis is the long straight runway of the aeroplane-shaped Pilot Plan — 16 km west to east, ending at the Esplanada and the Three Powers Plaza. Along its length sit most of the city's monuments: the JK Memorial at the western end, the TV Tower in the middle, then the cathedral, theatre, museum-and-library pair, ministries, congress, and the Three Powers Plaza at the far eastern end.

Walking the full length is unrealistic — about 12 km of monumental sights — but the central stretch from the TV Tower east to the Cathedral and on to Congress (about 2 km) is the must-do, and on a Sunday morning when the road is closed to cars, it is genuinely pleasant.

A story
At 250 metres wide, the Eixo Monumental is one of the widest avenues in the world — Costa intended it to be a sequence of impressive vistas rather than a normal urban street. On Sundays, the central reservation closes to traffic and fills with cyclists, joggers, families, fitness classes and food trucks, briefly turning Brasília's most relentlessly car-centric piece of urbanism into its biggest park.
