Mané Garrincha Stadium

World Cup stadium with a sweeping concrete colonnade

The Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha was rebuilt for the 2014 FIFA World Cup at vast public expense (around $900 million) on the site of the city's older 1970s stadium. Its dramatic external ring of 288 white concrete pillars and a tensile membrane roof was designed by German architects gmp and São Paulo's Castro Mello.

Capacity is 72,000, but the stadium has struggled to find a regular user — Brasília has no major football club — and it now hosts concerts, the occasional national team game, and city events. Guided tours are offered most days, including locker rooms and the pitch.
