The Avenida Beira Mar promenade is the centre of Fortaleza's street life: most evenings the seafront fills with a craft fair (feria de artesanato) selling lace, leather, and ceramics at local prices. The Mercado Central nearby has four floors of the same goods at fixed prices. The historic Dragão do Mar cultural centre in the Praia de Iracema neighbourhood has a planetarium, contemporary art museum, and an outdoor amphitheatre that hosts concerts. The city's beaches are the main daytime activity: Praia do Futuro, a few kilometres east, is the most popular with locals for its beach barracas serving cold beer and fresh fish. For day trips, the sand dunes and cliffs of Canoa Quebrada (about 160 km east) are the standout excursion; Cumbuco beach to the west is the centre of kitesurfing on the northeast coast.
