Ubatuba

São Paulo coast town where Atlantic Forest drops into a long run of surf beaches.

Ubatuba sits on the north coast of São Paulo state, roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It is a beach town, but not a simple resort strip: the Atlantic Forest presses close behind the shore, roads bend around steep green slopes, and the coast breaks into dozens of beaches with very different moods.

The easy version of Ubatuba is a few days of swimming, seafood, and evenings around Itaguá. The better version needs a car or patience with local buses, because the best beaches are spread along about 100 km of coast. Itamambuca is the classic surf name, while the Picinguaba stretch feels wilder, with protected rainforest, caiçara fishing communities, and long quiet sand at Praia da Fazenda.

There is enough here for a mixed day even if the weather turns. Projeto Tamar gives Ubatuba a conservation anchor, the aquarium works well for families, and boat trips run to Ilha Anchieta State Park, where beaches, prison ruins, and forest trails sit on one island.

Summer holidays bring traffic and full beaches. Outside weekends and school breaks, Ubatuba can feel almost empty, especially away from the centre; that is often when it is at its best.
