Parque da Marejada

The city's main event park, on the south bank of the Itajaí-Açu river. The Marejada festival in October fills the grounds for ten days with food stalls, live music — fado, popular Brazilian — and folkloric dance from the descendants of the Azorean settlers.

Outside the festival the park is a public green space with playgrounds, a small fairground, and weekend craft markets. Most of the action is in the evenings; daytime weekdays are quiet.

A story
The Marejada festival every October celebrates the Azorean Portuguese settlers who founded Itajaí in 1860 — the highlight is the bacalhau (salt cod) cooked in vast wood-fired ovens at the park, attended by tens of thousands.
