Itajaí is a port town: most of its visible life is on the riverside and at the docks. There are some good beaches on the city's southern fringe, a couple of historic churches and museums in the centre, and easy access to the more glamorous coast at Balneário Camboriú. The big annual event is the Volvo Ocean Race / The Ocean Race stopover, which the city has hosted multiple times since 2008.
