The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Rocio is Paranaguá's principal Catholic church and the seat of the city's most important religious festival. The current building dates from the 18th century, replacing earlier wooden structures. Its single bell tower and white plastered façade dominate the square it shares with the old town hall.
The festival of Nossa Senhora do Rocio in mid-November is the biggest event on the Paranaense religious calendar — pilgrims walk from across the region, and the church and surrounding streets fill with worshippers, bands, and food stalls.
