The Tahai ceremonial complex is just north of Hanga Roa, a short walk from town. Three ahu line up along the coast: Ahu Vai Ure with five weathered moai, Ahu Tahai with a single statue, and Ahu Ko Te Riku — the one with the restored eyes and topknot. Behind the platforms are the foundations of boat-shaped houses, taro plantations, and a small harbour. This is the easiest of the island's major sites to reach and the place everyone goes for sunset.
Crowds appear an hour before dusk. The grass behind the platforms is the obvious vantage point but the rocky shoreline a little to the south gives a cleaner silhouette of the statues against the sky. The site is free to enter — no national park ticket required.
