Ana Kakenga

Rapa Nui lava-tube cave known for its two ocean-facing windows in the cliff.

Ana Kakenga is one of Rapa Nui's most memorable lava-tube caves, not because it is large, but because of how it ends. After a low, dark entrance and a short passage, the cave opens into two natural windows high above the ocean. The sudden blue light and the sound of waves below make the place feel theatrical in the best possible way.

The cave also carries the island's older, harder history. Lava tubes like this were used as refuge spaces during periods of conflict between clans, and the cramped entrance makes that defensive purpose easy to understand. Bring a torch, wear shoes with grip, and do not go in if you are uncomfortable crawling or moving through tight, dark spaces.
