The classic city viewpoint, a short and steep walk up from the Plaza along Calle Fagnano. From the small terrace by the cross you get the whole geography of Punta Arenas in a single sweep — the corrugated-iron roofs in blue, green and red stretching down to the harbour; the long grey line of the Strait of Magellan; and, on a clear day, the silhouette of Tierra del Fuego across the water.
It's most rewarding in the late afternoon, when the light is low and the wind sometimes drops. Lovers come up here at sunset, and there are usually a few stray dogs and a couple of school kids playing football. Bring a hat: even in summer this is a windy spot.
