Museo Maggiorino Borgatello

The Salesian missionary museum, three blocks north of the Plaza on Avenida Bulnes, is dusty, overstuffed and quietly fascinating. The Italian priests who arrived in the 1880s set themselves the task of documenting absolutely everything they saw in southern Patagonia, from the rocks to the birds to the people, and the museum is essentially the inventory of that project.

There are good ethnographic galleries on the Selk'nam, Yámana, Kawéskar and Tehuelche peoples, including some of the only surviving photographs of the Selk'nam Hain initiation ceremony; cases of stuffed Patagonian wildlife (some now extinct in the area); the original mission press; minerals, fossils, and a slightly alarming collection of religious art. It is named after the priest who founded the collection in 1893.
