Reserva Nacional Magallanes

A 20,000-hectare forest reserve in the hills immediately west of Punta Arenas, known to locals simply as "la Reserva". The lenga and coihue forest here is the southernmost mainland temperate woodland in the world, and the reserve has marked walking trails, a small ski centre that operates briefly in winter, and the Mirador Las Lengas, which gives you a view back over the city and the strait.

It's about 8 km from the centre and easy to reach by taxi or rental car. The most popular short walk is the Sendero Las Lengas, an hour-long loop through gnarled, wind-bent beech trees. In winter you can drive up to the small ski hill, which gets snow but not always enough for serious skiing.
