Puerto del Hambre, or Port Famine, is one of the starkest historic places near Punta Arenas. The failed Spanish settlement on the Strait of Magellan became a byword for hunger, exposure, and the brutal difficulty of holding this far southern coast.
The site is quiet today, with ruins and markers set against wind, water, and huge sky. Its power lies in that emptiness. Combine it with Fuerte Bulnes or other stops south of the city, and dress for weather that makes the story easier to believe.
