Iglesia de La Tercera

18th-century church with an extraordinary gilded retable and baroque interior

One of the lesser-known colonial churches in La Candelaria, La Tercera (formally the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo de la Tercera Orden) has a spectacularly ornate interior that most visitors walk past. The gilt retable behind the main altar is among the finest surviving examples of colonial baroque in Bogota.

The church is often quiet when the nearby Catedral Primada and Iglesia Santa Clara are busy, making it a good alternative. Mass is held regularly; otherwise the church is generally open to visitors during daylight hours. Worth 20 minutes of your time.
