Teatro Colon

Bogotá's 19th-century opera house, still the city's premier stage

Address Calle 10 No 5-32

Bogotá's grandest theatre, built in 1895 and designed by Italian architect Pietro Cantini, sits in La Candelaria a block from the Plaza de Bolívar. The interior is all gilded tiers, painted ceiling murals, and crimson velvet — one of the finest 19th-century opera houses in Latin America. It hosts opera, ballet, classical concerts, and theatrical performances year-round.

Even if you don't catch a performance, free guided tours run on weekday mornings and give access to the ornate foyer and auditorium. Check the programme and book ahead for anything on a weekend.
