Plaza de Caicedo

Cali's historic main square shaded by palms and flanked by the cathedral

The heart of the colonial centre: a large, shaded square with tall royal palms, benches and the Palacete Municipal on one side and the Cathedral of St Peter on the other. A bronze statue of Joaquín de Caycedo y Cuero — the independence leader who was shot here in 1813 — stands at the centre. Best visited in the morning when the light is low and the city's office workers cross it on the way to work.
