Barniz de Pasto Workshops

The barniz de Pasto craft tradition has been practised in the city for at least four centuries, using a natural plant resin harvested from the Putumayo rainforest. Workshops around the centre — most concentrated near Carrera 24 — produce trays, boxes, and small furniture decorated in this technique.

Visitors can usually drop in to see craftsmen at work and buy direct. The Museo Taminango has a good display of historical pieces.

A story
Barniz de Pasto is a unique lacquerware technique developed locally from a natural resin called mopa-mopa, harvested from a tree native to the Putumayo. The resin is chewed soft, dyed, stretched into translucent sheets by hand, and applied to wooden objects in intricate floral patterns. UNESCO inscribed the craft as Intangible Heritage in 2020.
