Hiking Trails

The main trail through Tayrona runs approximately 13 km from El Zaíno through Canaveral, Arrecifes, La Piscina, and Cabo San Juan. It passes through forest that ranges from relatively dry scrub near the entrance to dense humid jungle as you approach the coast. The path is well-marked and maintained, with rope sections on steeper slopes. Comfortable shoes are adequate — hiking boots aren't required but are better in wet season.

The Chairama loop extends the main trail by adding a steep 2-3 hour detour up through forest to the pre-Columbian site, continuing to the western Calabazo entrance. This route turns Tayrona into a two-day traverse. A shorter loop goes from Cabo San Juan up to Chairama and back down to the coast, feasible in half a day. Guides are available at El Zaíno; they are not required on the main trail but are worth hiring for Chairama, where the path is less obvious and context is useful.
