Pailon del Diablo is the most dramatic waterfall excursion from Banos, where the Rio Verde drops into a narrow, spray-filled gorge. The name means 'Devil's Cauldron,' and the best viewpoints make the reason obvious: water pounds into a rocky bowl while mist rises through the vegetation.
The waterfall is often visited as part of the Ruta de las Cascadas, but it deserves its own time. Paths and bridges lead to different angles, including close-up views where waterproof clothing is useful, and the short hike gives a stronger sense of the valley than a quick roadside photo stop.
