Thermal Baths

The hot springs that give Baños its name (literally "baths") flow from the flanks of Tungurahua at high temperature. Several bathing complexes have been developed around these springs, ranging from the basic public pools at the Complejo de Aguas Termales to more developed spa facilities. The water is dark and sulphurous — not everyone's aesthetic, but with genuine mineral content.

The most popular option is the main public complex adjacent to the Virgen waterfall at the edge of town. Open evenings as well as daytime, the pools are particularly pleasant after dark when the temperature drops. Ecuadorian families use these pools regularly, and they have a genuine community character quite different from spa tourism. Bring a towel and a pair of flip-flops; lockers are available.

A story
The thermal springs of Baños originate in the volcanic system of Tungurahua and arrive at the surface at temperatures between 50°C and 70°C — hot enough to cook food. The public baths dilute the water to around 40°C for the main pools and provide cooler pools for contrast swimming. After a day of cycling the waterfall route, an evening in the thermal pools with the volcano looming above in the darkness is a memorable way to end it.
