Cerro Brujo

A sweeping white-sand beach on San Cristóbal's north coast, accessible only by boat.

Cerro Brujo is typically included in full-day north coast tours from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, often combined with Kicker Rock or Isla Lobos. The boat ride takes about 45 minutes from town. The beach is long and quiet, and the snorkelling in the bay is excellent — sea lions are almost guaranteed, and the coral formations shelter schools of reef fish.

The name (Brujo means sorcerer or witch doctor in Spanish) supposedly references the unusual rock formations at the northern end of the beach, which are strikingly different from the white sand — dark, fractured lava that the Spanish settlers found unsettling. Whether or not the story is true, it is a good beach with good wildlife, and you will almost certainly have most of it to yourself.

A story
Cerro Brujo is one of those beaches that looks impossible — powder-white sand, turquoise water, not another tourist in sight. It is accessible only by boat, which is partly why it stays that way. Frigate birds, pelicans, and sea lions share the shore, apparently indifferent to each other and to visitors. The beach faces north and is sheltered enough that it stays calm even when the southern coast is rough.
