Playa Carola

A small sea turtle nesting beach just past the Interpretation Centre.

Playa Carola sits just beyond the Interpretation Centre, at the end of the same path that leads to Frigatebird Hill. It is a small, sheltered cove with calm water suitable for snorkelling — sea turtles are often seen here too, feeding on the algae in the shallows rather than nesting. Marine iguanas are a reliable presence on the rocks.

The beach is within walking distance of town — around 25 minutes from the main waterfront. No facilities, no entry fee. It makes a natural extension to a morning visit to the Interpretation Centre and Frigatebird Hill, turning what could be a two-hour trip into a very full half-day without needing any transport.

A story
Playa Carola is a sea turtle nesting site — one of several on San Cristóbal — and during nesting season (December to March) it is not uncommon to see females hauled up on the sand at night or, if you are lucky with timing, hatchlings making their run to the sea. The beach is small and shaded by vegetation at the back, which keeps it cooler than the open beaches further along the coast. It also tends to be quieter, as most day-trippers don't continue past the Interpretation Centre.
