Playa Mann

The town beach, a short walk from the waterfront — sea lions included, free entry.

Playa Mann is a ten-minute walk west from the main waterfront along a well-signed path. It is the closest proper beach to town and the most accessible, with no boat ride or taxi required. The sand is dark volcanic, the water is usually calm, and there are basic facilities — showers, toilets — at the entrance.

The sea lion colony at the western end of the beach is one of the most relaxed you will encounter anywhere in the archipelago. The animals haul out, sleep, and occasionally slide back into the surf, entirely ignoring the humans a few metres away. Marine iguanas also appear from time to time, draped over the rocks at the edge of the sand. Swimming is generally safe when the sea is calm, though the rip can pick up during the dry season.

A story
Playa Mann is one of those rare urban beaches where the wildlife outnumbers the tourists. Sea lions occupy the far end of the sand as a matter of course, and they enter the water alongside swimmers without any particular interest in the distinction. The beach is close enough to town that locals use it regularly — families in the afternoon, surfers in the morning — which gives it a lived-in feel that the more remote sites lack.
