Teleférico Quito

The Teleférico is Quito's cable car, running from a station in the western suburbs up to the flanks of the Pichincha volcano at an altitude of around 4,100 metres. The ten-minute ride offers extraordinary views over the city — the full extent of Quito's ribbon development along the Andean valley, with volcanoes rising in every direction. At the top station, Cruz Loma, there is a restaurant and a series of walking trails on the páramo (high Andean grassland).

On clear days — typically early morning before the afternoon clouds build — the panorama is exceptional: Cotopaxi, Antisana, Cayambe, Chimborazo, and the entire Quito basin visible at once. If you want to hike to Rucu Pichincha summit (2–3 hours return from the top station), bring warm clothing and be aware that altitude sickness is possible even for acclimatised visitors. The Teleférico can be busy on weekends; book ahead if possible. Take a jacket regardless of the weather in the city — it is cold up there.

A story
The Teleférico takes you from 2,950 metres altitude (already higher than most European capitals) to 4,100 metres in under ten minutes. At the top, you are on the flank of Rucu Pichincha, one of the twin peaks of the active Pichincha volcano that last erupted significantly in 1999, depositing ash on much of the city. The summit of Rucu Pichincha itself (4,698 metres) is a two-hour hike from the cable car station — serious altitude, but achievable for fit walkers.
